Celebration, song and candlelight: Lighting of the Green highlight of the Christmas season.

By Rachel Schrag Sommerfeld

One evening out of the year, the famous BC green undergoes a dramatic transformation.

The usual action of the green - Ultimate Frisbee games, study sessions under the trees and the conversations of blanket-lounging students - is suspended for an evening of candlelight and singing, celebrating the birth of Christ.

The lighting of the green is again upon us, an opportunity to forget about the stresses of finals week and think about the meaning of the season.

"In the dark of December, we invite people to come and bear witness to the true light of Christ which is coming into the world," said Patty Shelly, professor of Bible and religion, and organizer for the event.

Participants surround the green for a 15-minute worship service with carol singing. Each person receives a candle and after the singing, the green is slowly lit by candlelight, forming a giant Advent wreath. After each individual light has been illumined, the crowd gathers in the center of the green, forming a giant Christ candle.

"It is an opportunity to see the campus green in a unique way - surrounded with a circle of candle-light. It is an amazing sight," Shelly said.

Most of the campus lights are turned off to help create a mood for the event, now in its 15th year. Often 250 former and current students, faculty, staff and community members participate.

"The lighting of the green was initially conceived of as a 'one-time' occasion, but was so meaningful that people wanted to do it again. I remember one year when the night was so still and there was a gentle snow falling - it was beautiful," Shelly said.

Shelly encourages everyone to attend the lighting of the green at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10. Refreshments will follow in the Schultz Student Center. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in Memorial Hall.

Volunteerism: Nobody can accuse you of being in it for the money.

The intangible benefits of voluntary service are undoubtedly greater than a high-paying job, but the monetary benefits are practically nonexistent. Nonetheless, volunteer programs are thriving in the United States, and many former volunteers are grateful for their one-of-a-kind experience. The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is an international program designed to aid others. MCC does a variety of development and relief projects throughout the world.
